Burkino Faso has suffered from a turbulent recent political history. There were numerous military coups during the 1980s until Blaise Compaore, the current President, was elected unopposed in 1991. The government does not have laws on apostasy, and protects religious communities. There is no anti-Christian activity in Burkina Faso and animists, Muslims, Catholics, and Protestants enjoy peaceful relationships. The nation has a day of forgiveness once a year where members of all faiths attend their place of worship to pray for the country and for forgiveness. This foundation of prayer has seen real fruit in Burkino Faso which now enjoys peace and tolerance.
