Gaza Strip and West Bank, Middle East
Population: 3,889,249
Christians: 1-2%
Dominant Religion: Sunni Islam
Persecution Ranking: Not Ranked
Political Leader: President of Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas
Religious Freedom in Constitution: Yes
Today, between one and two percent of the Palestinian population are Christians. This has fallen from 12% in 1967. Nowhere is the decline in the percentage of indigenous Christians more apparent than here. A major cause is emigration, prompted by the political situation perceived locally as an oppressive occupation. The Palestinian Basic Law, equivalent to a constitution, calls for respect and sanctity of Christianity and this is respected. The Christian community has been deeply affected by the on-going Al-Aqsa Intifada that started on the 29th of September 2000. Christians are frequently caught in the middle of Palestinian and Israeli violence. Despite the strife and general tension, some choose to follow Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Many suffer intense family pressure.
Prayer Points
|
Pray for an enduring resolution of the conflict with Israel. |

|
Pray that those who turn to Christ will find fellowship and discipleship. |

|
Pray for a big reduction in the emigration of Christians, and that Believer's passion to serve their LORD would, where possible, overcome the desire to leave. |
Dear LORD Jesus, the Holy One of God who walked in these lands, bring peace to these troubled areas. Grant perseverance and success to all who seek to be peacemakers, whether they are acting at local, national, or regional levels. Uphold and strengthen Your Church, that it may truly reflect Your love and light. May Your peace reign within the hearts and minds of all who acknowledge You as Savior and LORD. Amen.
