Guinea-Bissau, West Africa
Population: 1,416,027
Christians: 5%
Dominant Religion: Tribal
Persecution Ranking: Not Ranked
Political Leader: President Joao Bernardo Vieira
Religious Freedom in Constitution: Yes
During the civil war of 1998-99, evangelical Christians played an important role in distributing food, providing transport and seeking to bring about reconciliation between the warring factions. Because of their mature response, the church has gained the respect of the newly elected government. There are not many Christian Believers in the country, but the ones who are there are mature and have a desire to share their faith. The constitution provides for freedom of religion, and the government generally respects this right in practice. There is no overt persecution of Christians or reports of religious prisoners.
Prayer points:
Pray for pastors in the interior of the country who carry responsibility for often up to 10 congregations.
Pray for discipleship, leadership and evangelism training that the Church can respond to the relative openness to preach the Gospel.
Pray that the national church will evangelize the unreached through translation, radio broadcasting, JESUS film showings and other appropriate means of communication in this largely oral society.
LORD God Almighty, we thank you for giving Christian Believers new respect in the eyes of the elected government and we ask that this will lead to a great openness to the Gospel. We pray that the Church will respond at this time to spread the good news among remaining unreached people groups in the country. Amen
