Guinea, West Africa
Population: 9,467,866
Christians: 8%
Dominant Religion: Sunni Islam
Persecution Ranking: Not Ranked
Political Leader: President Lansana Conte
Religious Freedom in Constitution: Yes
Guinea is potentially one of the richest countries in Africa with its fertile land and abundant mineral resources. Yet, the government has struggled to bring economic recovery. Guinea's only source of financial backing comes from Saudi Arabia.
Islam is demographically, socially, and culturally the dominant religion and Muslims generally adhere to the Sunni branch of Islam. A military coup in 1984 swept President Lansana Conte to power as President of a multiparty democracy. The Constitution provides for freedom of religion, and the government generally respects this right in practice, although evangelism is restricted. Religious mixing of animism and Christianity (syncretism) reflects the continuing influence and acceptability of traditional indigenous beliefs and rituals, and has resulted in a weakening of the Christian faith in Guinea. The government reportedly favors Muslims over non-Muslims and tends to defer to local Muslim sentiment. In some areas, intolerance by Muslims has increased and strong social pressure discourages Christians from openly practicing their faith.

Dear God and Father of our LORD Jesus Christ, we ask that Your Church in Guinea might continually know You better by having full access to Your Word in many forms. We ask you to increase religious freedom for our brothers and sisters in Guinea, that they may spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and present an opportunity for everyone who seeks the true God to know who you are. LORD, we ask that you would plant a congregation of Christian Believers into every refugee camp and ethnic community to be a living testimony to the Truth. Amen. |
