Mali, West Africa

Population: 12,291,529
Christians: 1%
Dominant Religion: Sunni Muslim
Persecution Ranking: Not Ranked
Political Leader: President Amadou Toumani Toure
Religious Freedom in Constitution: Yes

Overthrowing a military dictatorship in 1961, Mali became a multiparty democracy. Its Constitution defines the country as a secular state and allows for religious practices that do not pose a threat to social stability and peace. Adherents of a variety of faiths may be found within the same family. Many followers of one religion attend religious ceremonies of other religions, especially weddings, baptisms, and funerals. Mali is a primarily agricultural economy and since only two percent of the land can be cultivated, many have suffered from famine.
The country has been open to Christian workers particularly the rural-based development workers, and the government seeks to contain those who oppose Christian ministries. Islam, as practiced in the country, is tolerant and adapted to local conditions. Women participate in economic and political activity, engage in social interaction, and generally do not wear veils. Malians are free to change their religion without prosecution. Even so, the laborers are few.

Prayer Point

Pray for Muslim background believers, that they may grow in their faith, be discipled and reach others in their communities for Christ.

LORD God, please look upon on this small country with favor and blessing. Show forth Your grace and mercy on Mali and draw them into Your Kingdom. We thank You for the peaceful co-existence between the various faiths and pray that as Christians take advantage of this, being salt and light in their communities, many will come to faith in our Lord Jesus. Reveal Yourself in fresh and powerful ways to those that do believe and mightily increase their numbers. Amen.
