The Unthinkable - Muslims Attacking a Mosque in Egypt's Sinai

Egypt has dealt with attacks against its Coptic Christians and their churches, but the attack of a Sufi Muslim Mosque was met with shock. "I can't believe they attacked a mosque," said a local Muslim cleric. Bir al-Abed is in the northern Sinai, a troubled area used by Daesh (IS) militants to infiltrate Gaza and Israel. An Islamic State magazine last January outlined the group's hatred for Sufis, accusing them of "sorcery and soothsaying." Officials called the 24 November attack the deadliest attack in Egypt's modern history. 305 victims died, including 27 children as worshippers met at midday for prayers.

Witnesses claim that the attackers stationed themselves at the door and 12 windows and fired at the masses, then barged in with automatic weapons, carrying the Islamic State flag. They fired on those trying to flee, and at approaching ambulances attempting to reach the wounded. Egypt immediately retaliated with several airstrikes near Bir al-Abed, targeting militants fleeing in four-wheel-drive vehicles. Other Muslim sects consider Sufis apostates because of their mystical practices. Even Hamas, the militant group controlling Gaza denounced the attack, claiming it violates all heavenly commandments and human values."

The nation of Egypt is number 21 on the 2017 Open Doors World Watch List of the worst persecutors of Christians in the world. Window International Network partners pray for Egypt on Day 12 by following the Praying Through the Window 9: Global Terrorism and World Religions prayer calendar.
Please pray for:

  • The families of the slaughtered Sufi worshippers in Bir al-Abed as well as the Sufi community to seek the One True God who loves them and longs for them to turn to Him in Faith (The Bible, Hebrews 11:16).

  • Egypt's President Sisi to receive wise counsel as he seeks to guarantee safety for Egypt's worshippers of all faiths (The Bible, Proverbs 11:14).

  • Christianity to grow and multiply in Egypt as its people see the hatred and evil perpetrated by some Muslims who claim they are carrying out a god's (Allah) will (The Bible, Psalm 33:12).
